After the frost i dug up our first parsnips, they look like small fists with numerous tenticles. They are in the same bed as th carrots which have been uniformly straight. They`re in a raised bed which had sand dug into it before planting,no manure, peas there last year.Any ideas?

My parnips are huge and straight but my carrots were pretty puny and almost all forked - grown next to each other! This has happened before - our soil is very heavy clay so I planted stump rooted carrots this year but it still happened. Am now building a raised bed for next year!

Reason for asking is that I have a theory; parsnips fork when water is plentiful - but are straighter when they have to get down deeper/quicker for water.

April was very dry and unseasonably warm so, unless you have heavy soil Annie, you may just have shot my theory to bits.  Are they all badly forked - might it just be stones?

Good theory WG., but what about like mine, all planted same time, all watered the same, no stones, no fresh manure, but some are long and straight and some are forked and all in the same row.  And I thinned them, unlike the carrots!!!!!

can I double dig using a rotovator? as I really never have time to double dig the plot.. At the mo I am covering 80% of the plot in manure then going to rotovator it in 2 or 3 times at different depths.. ok or not?

A rotavator would be tricky in raised beds! Also this bed was well dug to incorpor ate the sand and add compost anyway why were the carrots fine.
Not quite  shot your theory out of the water WG,when did the rain start? As I said these were slow to germinate..
