Chick crumbs
« on: August 31, 2007, 16:47 »
We have recently hatched some eggs, 2 to be precise and they are now 4 weeks old and on chick crumb. On the bag of chick crumb it says do not feed chick crumb after 8 weeks of age, can somebody please tell me why ?
Many thanks
Mike

Once they get to 8 weeks old they should go on to Growers mash or pellets, but you can finish off any chick crumb you have so it doesn't get wasted.

Then at 18 weeks they go onto their Layer's mash or pellets

But why?   Is it that chick crumbs have too high a protein content?

Funnily enough Allen & Page recommend growers from 4 weeks, then layers from 12 weeks.
Their chick crumbs are 17.5% protein. Growers and layers are both 16%.

I can't see any reason that chick crumbs would hurt older birds. If they contain ACS then they shouldn't be fed to layers or table birds near to killing as it shouldn't get into the food chain.

What brand on chick crumb are you using?

I think you need to tell everyone on the board what ACS is Si  :!:

I knew it's a coccidiostat but most people wont .

Yep my favourite subject and a complete no-no for ducklings :(  As voracious eaters it can kill them.  Just a friendly warning. :)

Yes chick crumbs have Coccidistats (unless organic small holder range)  and therefore not to be given to ducklings.  I couldn't get any without it so used the organic range for mine till they were old enough to go onto layers pellets and corn.

Apparently not, I called a Duck Wildlife centre and spoke to their expert and she told me what to get (organic) also a handy tip was to give them Chappie dog food with a little water to soften it.  They loved it and thrived but it does make the poo's a bit smellier

Allen and Page do a Goose / Duck starter - and if it's A&P it won't contain any nasties. I don't work for them by the way!

ACS is a medication which is added to feed usually during manufacture and is usually fed to chickens, turkeys and rabbits to prevent coccidiosis.

Like most pests and diseases that poultry are susceptible to, ACS is more of a problem to birds that are stressed by usually poor husbandry or confined housing.

Most chick crumbs don't contain ACS nowadays unless you are buying the more commercial rations from Countrywide, BOCM, etc.

I have 6 ducks that were raised on chick crumbs. The feed I buy isn't marketed as organic or duck friendly and the ducks are big and healthy.
Were my Ducks just lucky then?
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

Bonsoir FC - can you tell me where you get your oystershell feed from and what they call it over here? I'll be mainly using my local Espace Terrena store  for feed & stuff but don't think I've seen it there? TIA.

Cheers,

Stu.

In a moment of madness I bought a 25kg sack, can you believe it 25kg for two chicks   :?
The name on the bag is Henry Bell !! would it be best to give the surplus away when the chicks move onto other food or can it still be used ??
I promise you I'm not thick honest just new at keeping hens
