Rowan Berries - poisonous to chickens?
« on: July 29, 2010, 19:15 »
Hi,
In our chicken enclosure there's a tree that has rowan berries on, I know they're poisonous to humans, does anyone know if they're also poisonous to chickens?
Thanks

neither the rowan or it's close relative the whitebeam (both members of the sorbus family) appear in the toxic to poultry list - which is a good job as i have several of each of these and my birds often try jumping up to get the berries
Staffies are softer than you think.

Rowan berry and apple jam is delicious :)

I have a very LARGE rowan tree in my garden - the hens don't eat any fallen berries but the starlings and blackbirds strip the tree in late August.

lots of crab apple trees near here so this should be easy (I hope - have only ever made mixed fruit jam in a bread maker once before  ::) ).

has my mum been lying to me all these years telling me they're deadly poisonous?
I'm presuming since you seem to still be fine she must have been!

Ahh I feel so deceived =p She swore to me that mum's knew everything! Three days before my 20th birthday and I find out she's been wrong for the entire 20 years!

I haven't progressed past eating anything other than strawberry jam let alone making it! But I guess now's a good a time as any to give it a go!
