I know very little about foxes, but I woke up in the middle of the night last night to some really weird sounds and it wasn't cats!  Is it mating season for foxes?

Humm It's getting towards that time, usually more Jan time, but I have heard them on the mountain just recently, so obviously practicing  unsure blush

The vixan sounds like a woman screaming, very loud and scary if you don't know what it is  smile

I don`t think the vixens are fussy about time of year they scream . I had one scream about 30ft behind me 2am on a june morning when i was carp fishing.

Make me jump ? I was nearly in the lake. biggrin

I remember my first experience of hearing foxes calling/screaming was the middle of the night after I had been to see The Blair Witch Project at the pictures.

To say that it scared me would be a massive understatement.  Hid under the duvet until morning, terrified to come out, because I had no idea what it was.

As Vember says, if you don't know what it is, it is very scary...

Some owls can also sound as though a baby is being murdered (sorry to be so graphic)

Oh deep joy!  Sounds like screaming women . . . . raccoons sound that way too.  But you don't have those here.  So it was a vixen and right outside in our front garden.  So close to our hens in the back . . . sigh.

Enjoyed everyone's experiences though!   biggrin tongue2

years ago when i was a chef i returned home from work very late, not wanting to go straight to bed i flicked throught the sky channels, The Blair Witch was 5 minutes into the film (the first 5 minutes that you would realise it wasn't a genuine documentary Roll Eyes) i really thought i was watching the real thing and was absolutely terrified, it wasn't until weeks later i found out from work friends (after they had all fallen about laughing) that it was in fact just a film laugh
i bought the video and got my kids to watch it on halloween night (they were littler then) i fast forwarded it past the first 5 mins and  told them we were watching a documentary biggrin they were terrified too laugh

Read Foxy's post, looked at cat curled up sleeping on the mouse mat next to me and couldn't resist...  biggrin

Backfired on me though as Betsy scrabbled to run away - she took pretty much everything off the desk with her as she went.

Funny though!  tongue2

One dark evening my OH, a hypochondriac rookie horse owner, decided that his cob looked unwell.  I reassured him and we walked away from the stables.

From behind us we heard this terrible scream...
