Is it brought raw or cooked???

Sorry for what might seem an easy question, but I havnt a clue. Sad

You can get suet in packs from the supermarket or fresher from the butchers which you grate yourself. It's basically the hard fat you get from beef.....so it is'nt cooked Wink

You can also buy "vegetarian" suet in packs from the supermarkets but I never find it much good.

I cannot believe you've lead such a sheltered life to have never heard of "Atora" suet! tongue2

The atora suet that you buy already grated is proably the easiest and as it is a bit more processed, better for things like mincemeat and christmas puddings. I got given some last year that a friend had rendered down but it smelt and tasted a bit "beefy" and tainted the puds I made. Its great for savory stuff but would always use atora for mincemeat and puddings.

Would you like a recipe that doesn't use fat at all, just loads of fruit spice and cider.?

I'd like that.

Could we leave out the fruit & spice though?

No Fat Mincemeat

1 lb cooking apples, peeled, chopped and cooked to pulp
1 lb mixed dried fruit
4 oz dark muscavado sugar
1 tsp mixed spice
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 pint dry cider( can substitute dry apple juice)

Bung the lot in a large pan and stir, bring to boil and let it simmer til it goes all nice and thick. Put in sterlised jars, will keep for a month. If you are too lazy to sterilise jars, freeze in plastic container til needed. When cool you can stir in spirit of your choice but I don't bother.

Enjoy biggrin
Just thought maybe I should have started another thread called Fat Free Mincemeat recipe Roll Eyes
