Hi All, this might sound a bit silly but how long does it take a hen to produce eggs from the food you feed it ie Free range as to battery thanks -----Fred

Chickens are essentially feed the same thing if they are free range or battery.
Most battery hens are feed layers mash and free range are feed on either layers mash or pellets.

Not really, i am aware battery hens eat mash or pellets and thats what i give mine but as they are now free range which means they eat all sorts of differant things like worms, slugs, spiders, grass, grains etc so i am wandering if that effects the taste how long does it take to filter through to egg laying (free range eggs taste differant to battery eggs)---Fred

I think it took about a week from when we brought our ex-batts home before we noticed any real difference in their eggs smile

Yes what a chicken eats does affect the taste as well as colour of the yolk.
Greens (grass, cabbage......) will give your yolks a more yellow colour.
I would imagine that a couple of days is all it will take for it to filter through on a healthy chicken.  But if its exbatts then it is gonna take longer as they are normally got rid of around moult so they will have to get back to health.
