Allotment waiting lists and Landshare !
« on: January 05, 2009, 17:41 »
Getting so frustrated with the allotment waiting lists, especially when I keep hearing rumours of vacant plots not being filled and local councils 'apparently' trying not to fill the plots, how true that is I dont know.
Can only grow so much in my little garden so have also joined the landshare group aswell, suppose to be launching properly very soon. Anyone else joined and what do you think of the project ?

Ho Hum another year and no allotment !

I was really lucky. A few months ago, I contacted the local parish council clerk about an allotment and he replied that there was a long waiting list and it would be many years before I would get one. I suggested that, given such high demand, the council allocate more land to allotments AND they did! Another 20 allotments were created last month and the council have even erected a perimeter fence, access track, parking, vehicle turning area and they are extending the water supply! When I took over the allotment a few weeks ago, I asked some other newbies about how long they had been waiting and some said 7 years!

I went from number 4 to number 5 on my allotment waiting list.... Go figure.

I am in a rented with a paved yard, so I have to make do with a few containers.  My yard is only 12ft by 9ft as well, so dinky tiny... can't have too much in there or my son will have no where to kick his ball.

What's landshare? Is it like communal gardening?

I'm tempted to get on the blower to the local paper in a slow news week... it'll probably make the first 5 pages.

However there are plans afoot :D

I got a bit of a shock when I looked up our council allotments on the web.

They are actually acknowledging the demand and are elevating the status of temporary sites to permanant ones, also saying that they may have to look for more land.

The waiting lists are openly published and there is a link to the land-share scheme.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I had been on an allotment waiting list in Lancaster for 8 months and ended up moving house so I am now number 10 on a list in Bolton. I was advised it could be 18-24 months

I hadn't heard of Landshare but I have just registered my interest! I hope something comes of it!

is the landshare thing going to be strictly for growing of fruit and veg or do you think there might be a possiblity of being able to keep livestock through it? which you i cant do on the allotment.
