Hi everyone just wondering if anyone knew about growing pumpkins / butternut squashes (BNS) in containers?

The idea i have stupid as it sounds is too put a few squashes in a plant pot about 2 feet deepish and let the pumpkin/ BNS grow out of the containers and spread along the floor.

Would this work? Or is it just a silly notion?

Any other ideas would be most be welcome and many thanks for reading this post. I'm hoping to grow these so that i have a supply of organic food over the winter period. Self sufficiency an all that hard work but so rewarding just trying out new things and asking silly questions.

Sorry for the rant

Thanks all

You might get away with a smaller bush type squash in a big pot but as pumpkins can get to be very big plants then you'll probably be disappointed with the results in a pot.

I'd been harvesting from that straightneck (or it could be a crook neck  :? )  I rest the fruits on something like a plate (or old tile etc) to keep the fruit off the compost which could get wet. Don't em rotting off  :D

There were three builders rubble sacks in that pic, all lined up with space for me to get between to tend them and pick the fruits. All sitting on black sheet mulch laid on top of lotty weeds. So while the crops were growing the weeds weren't  :D This was when the plot was new and I didn't want to have to prepare beds when planting was more important and pressing

They were filled with kitchen scraps (no cooked food or bread) and fresh manure, home made compo and spent growbag etc. The manure went on top. It's an idea to surround the plant stem with decent compost to prevent the fresh manure burning the plant stem and making it collapse
